Thomas E. Schmalstig, age 89, of Kettering, OH passed away peacefully on July 5, 2021 at the Oaks of West Kettering. Thomas was born in Dayton, OH on December 4, 1931 to John and Virginia (Bettinger) Schmalstig. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a tank mechanic deployed in Hokkaido, Japan. He was employed by NCR for 25 years and later retired from the Beta Company as a machinist in 1993. He was a long-standing member of the Milton Athletic Club, an avid golfer, bowler, fisherman, hunter, card player, horse shoe pitcher and Cincinnati Reds fan. He is preceded in death by his children, Carla Kulhanek (Schmalstig) and Patrick Schmalstig; brothers and sisters Charles (Deanie), Virginia (John), Paul (Rose), Edward (Mary), and Katie (Wilmer). He is survived by his wife of 66 years Marilyn (Reger), sons Dennis (Judy) of Winter Park, FL, and Anthony (Victoria) of Newark, OH, brother Jerry (Jodie), sisters Carol (Carl), Mary (Louis), grandchildren Daniel (Rachael), Christopher (Chelsea), Annie (Bryant), Alan (Amy), Patrick, and four great-granddaughters Clare, Erin, Bridget, and Ava. Visitation will be 4-7 pm, Monday July 12, 2021 at Morris Sons Funeral Home, 1771 E. Dorothy Lane, Kettering. A Mass of Christian Burial to be held 10:00 am Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Ascension Catholic Church. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to morris-sons.com.
