Shirley Althoff Obituary


Shirley Ann Moore Althoff, of Centerville, OH passed away peacefully at home on October 24, 2021 at the age of 85. She was born in Dayton, OH to Jack L. and Miriam E. Moore. She was preceded in death by her husband William E. Althoff, brother Gary E. Moore and son Carl Arthur McGowan, II. She is survived by daughter MaryAnn McGowan of Hico, WV, son and daughter-in-law Mike and Tracy McGowan of Centerville who were her live-in caretakers, brother James V. (Pam) Moore of Centerville, grandchildren TJ Hall, Benny McGowan, Mikayala McGowan, Josh McGowan, and great grandson Jaxon Hall. She also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Shirley was the “neighborhood mom” to many and her home was where all the kids and their friends gathered.

Shirley graduated from Fairmont High School in Kettering, OH and served as co-captain of the Rhythmettes. She graduated from Ohio State University in 1958 with a BS in nursing. She received her licensure in Funeral Directing and was vice president and co-owner of Schlientz and Moore Funeral Homes. She was a member of the board of trustees of Hospice of Dayton and served on the board of the Dayton Area Heart Association and Dayton Area Cancer Society. She was the first female president of the Greater Montgomery County Funeral Directors Association and past president and member of Soroptimist Club of Dayton.  She was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association; Ohio Funeral Directors Association; Centerville Bicentennial Committee; Women’s Oakwood Kiwanis Club; Bara Court No 15 LOSNA and of the Ohio State University Alumni Association.

Due to the pandemic, a memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton in her name.
