The Reverend Robert Shearer Obituary

The Reverend Robert James Shearer passed away at his home Monday, October 21, 2019.  He was born to John M. & Ruth (Hill) Shearer in 1933 in Leechburg, PA.  He graduated from Vandergrift High School, attended Grove City College where he graduated in 1959.  He married Susan D. Kerber in 1959 and they moved to Chicago where he attended McCormick Seminary.  Together they were blessed with three children: Mr. Gregory S. Shearer lives with his wife, Anne and Daughters, Cortney & Miranda in Columbus; Ohio Mrs. Deann C. Shearer-Peebles lives with her husband, David in Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Amy N. Vargo lives with her husband, Donald, in Dover, Ohio and their son: Joshua and his wife Heaven, in New Philadelphia, Ohio.  Also survived by his sister Charlotte Shearer and a brother Pete Shearer.  He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Paul Shearer. Besides being a father, he was a minister at five churches over the years; Hopedale, OH, Ford City, PA, Anderson, IN, Eaton, OH and First Westminster Presbyterian Church in Steubenville, OH where he retired for the first time after over 35 years of service to his congregations.  His second retirement followed after he mentored Jason Elliott, now Rev. Jason Elliott.  Robert was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served from 1953-1955.  He loved being outdoors, camping with his wife and children in their early years together, swimming, traveling and staying active, being a Mason and volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Group. He was devoted to his wife, children and to God, and to many family members and friends.  Robert’s life will be celebrated at Southminster Presbyterian Church on Far Hills Avenue.  A visitation will be Friday, October 25, from 4-6 p.m. at the church.  A funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 26, at the church with Pastor Nancy Birdsong and Rev. Jason Elliott officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Dayton, Dynamic Senior Solutions, Hospice of Dayton, or Southminster Presbyterian Church.  Bob & Sue’s favorite word to each other, love’s reminder: “Holland”, “Hope our Love Lasts and Never Dies”, which it has! Robert is back with Susan, his soulmate Reverandand love of his life.  Arrangements in care of MORRIS SONS FUNERAL HOME, 1771 E.
